Dear Fatima Parents,
It feels like fall outside and we are busy planning several exciting events for the next few weeks. So here we go:
OLF FALL WALK-A-THON:
Next week is the fall Walkathon that will take place during gym class. Students during gym class will walk for 45 minutes to raise money for our school. This is our major fall fundraiser with the goal of raising $10,000. This weekend, we need the students to sign-up sponsors with pledges to support their walk. To help us reach our goal, we are offering many incentives. If we reach this goal as a school, we will have an ice cream social and each class will receive an extra recess period the week of November 20. Here is the link for the sponsor sign-up.
INDIVIDUAL WALK-A-THON INCENTIVES:
We are also offering that each student with $150 in pledges will receive on Dress Down Coupon to be used the week of November 16th.
CLASS WALK-A-THON INCENTIVES:
Each whose class receives pledge sheets with a total over $600 will receive a $25 gift card .In the class with the overall highest pledge amount, each student will receive Dress Down coupons for the entire week of December 14.
This event will take place on our field over two nights next weekend: Friday, October 30th and Saturday, October 31st from 6:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. This is just a “fun” event; not a “fundraiser event.” Pre-purchased tickets with time reservation will be required.
As part of this event, each student will receive a pumpkin to create their very own Jack O’Lantern. Ms. Fleming will supervise the sending home of the pumpkins at dismissal today. Families can submit additional Jack O’Lanterns. Pumpkins are due back to school next Thursday, October 29th, or next Friday, October 30th: 8 :00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top three favorite pumpkins. A separate email will be sent with ticket purchase information.
Entrance fee: $10 per household. Costumes are encouraged and face masks are required. Here is the link to the site for more information.
RECYCLING AT OLF:
Recycling for the year will begin at OLF next week on Saturday, October 31st.
Please bring your refundable cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles in front of the school building between 8:30-10:30. The Middle School students will be helping to collect and sort the recyclable materials; this is a great way to earn Community Service hours. A sign-up sheet will be available via Sign-up Genius. The funds raised help to purchase school and classroom supplies for all grades.
Keep collecting all year and drop off as much as you can, every nickel counts! If you have any questions please reach out to email@example.com
Thank you, Laurie, for spearheading this initiative!
On October 14 we received updated guidance from the Diocese concerning basketball. The Diocese informed us that the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference considers that basketball to be a Moderate to High Risk sport meaning there is close sustained contact with a lack of significant protective barriers and high probability for respiratory particles to be transmitted between participants. The recommendation is “that elementary schools should not participate in interscholastic basketball play at this time.” Sorry to be the bearer of this unhappy news to our basketball crazy community.
Classroom dues for the year are $40 per child. The classroom dues this year will serve two main purposes. The first $20 will go toward the Classroom Baskets which will be included in our December Silent Auction. This auction is a major fundraiser for our school. Since we do not anticipate normal class field trips this school year, the remaining $20 will be used to fund class-specific events like bringing in a speaker, hosting an enrichment assembly, or funding a Holiday class party. You can just send in your check to your child’s homeroom teacher.
UPDATE FROM THE NURSE’S OFFICE:
Reminders, if your child is out ill, please call the Nurse’s office in the morning to let her know. Also, if you are traveling during this time, please make sure you first discuss the trip with our nurse. Your help is greatly appreciated. The nurse’s number is 762-8100 ext. 104.
SCHOOL PICTURE DAY:
Lifetouch was here last week for individual student pictures. It is not too late to order pictures from this historic year. Just go on-line to the Lifetouch website and put in the code from the ordering package to view your child’s pictures. There will be a make-up day in November.
MY FAVORITE CLASS, I VISITED THIS WEEK:
On Thursday, I was subbing in Ms. Seddik’s 7th-grade ELA class. Ms. Sedick had posted a short story, “The Open Window” by H.H. Monroe, a Youtube video, and comprehension questions in Google classroom. The students completed their work through Google Docs and submitted it back to Ms. Seddik. The 7th-grade students were engaged and working very hard throughout the lesson. It was a wonderful use of technology to keep the learning process going!
THANKSGIVING PIE UPDATE:
I have been talking about all the great upcoming events. We just concluded the Thanksgiving Pie sale and our Fatima community bought an impressive 383 pies with 125 other items sold. Thank you Carmel for spearheading this event! For those who participated, get ready to enjoy some delicious Thanksgiving Pies!
